THE ART OF COFFEE (ILLOS)

CULTURE x JOSEPH BRYCE
LA COLOMBE x ESPO
STUMPTOWN x WES LANG

Returning to the unfortunate work hood of Times Square, the business card for Culture Espresso went a long way in signaling that this is not your typical tourist trap. ... That (tattoo) artist, and other notables in this round up:

LA COLOMBE X
STEPHEN POWERS / ESPO

-

Of course we’re all familiar with Stephen’s sign and lettering work, but somehow I didn’t make the connection that the Colombe / Kurt Vile iconography was his.

A recent Silver Lake / “LA” store (I like what you did there sir):

Originally from Philly, Stephen collab'ed with another hometown hero, Kurt Vile, on his 2013 album artwork.

Some ‘buffman’ painted over it. Stephen comments here. ... And was cool enough to repaint the mural since.

STUMPTOWN X
WES LANG

-

Mug collection for Stumptown from 2011

-

Initially a tattoo artist, Wes uses Americana imagery, iconography and historical narratives and remixes them across various media. A Deadhead from Jersey that turned skater and got into Bad Brains in his 1970s youth, it all comes together in his work.

Note:

Understandably, Wes’s work of appropriating Native American imagery can be seen as culturally insensitive (not unlike the brands of the Cleveland Indians and Washington Redskins). However, considering his (Kanye) reach, I thought I would keep him in the post. His work is out there and worthy of a conversation.
